Getting Back on Track: 3 Steps You Can Take Today
Being on probation or parole does not mean your opportunities are over. Rebuilding your life takes action, and knowing where to start can make all the difference. Here are three practical steps toward stability, independence, and success.
1. Get Your State ID
Having a valid state ID can help you apply for jobs, access housing, open a bank account, and receive services. If you do not have one, contact an Illinois Secretary of State facility to learn which documents you need. Ask whether you qualify for an ID fee waiver.
2. Connect With a Workforce Center
Visit an Illinois workNet or American Job Center to ask about job training, résumé assistance, interview preparation, and employers open to hiring people with criminal records. Bring any identification and employment documents you have.
3. Get Your Important Documents Together
Locate your Social Security card, birth certificate, identification, and paperwork related to your supervision. If something is missing, start the replacement process. Keep copies of your documents and important appointment information in a safe place.
